Three teenage girls, all with dreams of being the first Miss Teen Rodeo Nebraska, held hands on stage of the Miss Rodeo Nebraska pageant style show last June during NEBRASKALand Days in North Platte while they waited for the results to be announced. After three days of intense competition, Jennifer Calvin of North Platte was awarded that honor. Miss Calvin won the categories of Personality, Appearance, Photogenic, People’s Choice and the coveted Horsemanship award.

The sixteen year-old is a junior at Maxwell High School where she is active in basketball, speech team, FCCLA, one-act play and has earned membership in the National Honor Society. She is a member of the Student Council and also works in the Maxwell Preschool classroom.

The daughter of Rod and Peggy Calvin of rural North Platte, Jennifer has honed her horsemanship skills on the family ranch helping out with round ups and spring brandings. Neighbors have even gotten involved by providing her with a variety of horses, at different levels of training, to increase her ability to “ride anything with hair”. Her first mount, a palomino pony named “Cookie”, is enjoying his life out to pasture and was joined this spring by the newest member of her horse family, “Hemi”, a colt born in May.

Jennifer is an all-American beauty, standing 5’6” with blonde hair, sparkling hazel eyes and a friendly smile, with just a hint of mischief, that make her a favorite with children and adults alike. She enjoys spending her free time hunting, fishing and being with her family and friends. In hoping to spread the joy of rodeo queening with others, Jennifer has spent time with several young girls, helping to prepare them for pageants.

“It’s an honor to represent the sport of rodeo and girls my age as the first Miss Teen Rodeo Nebraska,” says Miss Calvin. Her duties as MTRN 2006 have taken her to many rodeos across the state, both professional and amateur, as well as the NSRA Finals held last September in North Platte. She has been a guest at numerous rodeo queen pageants and even co-emceed the Miss Southwest Nebraska Rodeo Pageant Style Show in McCook.

The Miss Teen Rodeo Nebraska pageant is held annually in conjunction with the Miss Rodeo Nebraska Pageant during NEBRASKALand Days in North Platte each June. The contestants must be enrolled in the 9th through 12th grade in the upcoming school year and compete in horsemanship, photogenics, speech, personality and appearance.
