On July 4th, 1882, William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody staged the Old Glory Blowout in North Platte, Nebraska at a site believed to be near what is now Cody Park. That first rodeo was held in conjunction with the last of the big open range roundups in Nebraska. It featured bronc riding, roping and buffalo riding. It was so popular, that Cody developed his Wild West Show, that he took around the World.
But the Blowout continued in North Platte, and eventually became known as the Buffalo Bill Rodeo. In creating the sport, the visionary Cody was able to bring a bit of the Wild West to metropolitan consumers around the globe.
The event is recognized by the Professional Rodeo Cowboy’s Association and historians
as the World’s first spectator rodeo, and in 2008, our Buffalo Bill Rodeo Committee was inducted in to the PRCA Hall of Fame in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
The Buffalo Bill Rodeo is held annually on the third weekend in June. The 2013 event will run from June 12-15, and will once again feature top stock from the Beutler and Son Rodeo Company, also members of the PRCA Hall of Fame inducted in 2010.
