Fans at the Buffalo Bill Rodeo will be treated to horsepower of another kind.
It won’t be the four-legged equines, but horsepower with motors and tires.
The grand finale for their act will be to flip a dirt bike over a 75 foot distance, from launch ramp to landing trailer.
DJ Umphres and Brent Denton ride the motorbikes and have been working rodeos for the past seven years. For DJ, the thrill of being in the spotlight makes his adrenaline pump. “We’re the center of attention while we perform, and everybody in the whole entire venue is looking at us. It’s a pretty good rush.”
Umphres and Denton each have more than 15 years of experience in the freestyle motocross world and are multiple Arizona and California title holders. When he was 18, DJ won the American Motorcyclist Association’s California State Championship Freestyle competition, and the Pro-Am Class at Mammoth Mountain, California.
Their shows are set up to give fans an X-Games experience, complete with strobe lights and fog machines.
And DJ says you don’t have to be any crazier than a bull rider to ride freestyle motocross. “You just have to have a lot of practice.”
